FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
—
– Members of the Port of San Diego Ship Repair Association
are presenting a check for $15,000 to Rachael Ortiz, Barrio Station
executive director, to help fund the swimming pool program for
neighborhood kids. The pool is located at 2198 Newton Avenue,
corner of Sampson and Newton. The event begins at 12:30 p.m.
This is the third year that members of the Port of San Diego Ship
Repair Association have collectively raised money to help defray
the increasing costs needed to keep the pool open. The pool gives
neighborhood kids a place to go and have some good, clean fun
during the long summer months. This is a much-needed alternative
to being on the streets with no direction or supervision.
Southwest Marine, a subsidiary of United States Marine Repair,
America's largest non-nuclear ship repair, modernization and conversion
company; National Steel and Shipbuilding, a General Dynamics company;
Continental Maritime of San Diego, owned by Newport News Shipbuilding;
Pacific Ship Repair and Fabrication; Propulsion Controls Engineering;
Medland Controls and Western Hose and Supply have joined together
to make sure this important community asset continues to operate.
Continental Maritime is providing lunch and Southwest Marine is
bringing their giant walk-around character, SWMmer the Seahorse.
Without the help of these businesses, hundreds of high-risk kids
would be faced with the possible loss of the summer pool program.
